2008 for the bus fans.
its been an eventful year.
filled with new buses and new services.
amendments and withdrawals though could not be avoided.

City Shoppers and Premium Services were introduced by the bulk.
likewise for the new buses.
and a milestone for SBS Transit. the LTA had given the green light to allow buses to duplicate MRT routes. the first daring service, Peak Hour Service 128 (AMK - Shenton Way)

we bade farewell to the Volvo MK3s (1988-2008)
i remember this babies. they were my age. they were the flagship bus for service 170, in which is the oldest bus route (even older then SBS).
this Volvo was generally fast and agile amazingly.

SBS 3619 Y on 292
bidding farewell to the Scania N113CRB (1989-2008)
i recall boarding the a/c version in 1991 on the now defunct Service 122 (Bt Batok-St Michael's)
the special thing about it was that it had a very silent and quiet engine. the non a/c version though is another contrast.

bidding farewell to the Nissan U31RCN (1993-2009+)
although being the youngest among the old, this Japanese bus looks like it came back in time from the early 80s. well, this bus may be the slowest and the weakest. but its bumpy, springy and noisy ride brings back a sense of nostalgia. it reminds us of how worst the bus services were in the past.

SBS 3910 E on 142
potentially bidding farewell to the MB0405 (1990-2009+)
this Mercedes is almost a quarter the number of buses SBS owns.
the jerky gear shift was never my favourite, but the sheer speed of the Merc makes it all good.

so, who's taking over?

make way for the big boys. 200 of these Volvo B9TL are already up and running.
the first WAB buses in Singapore.

SBS 8459 J on 128
presenting, 900 of the Scania K230UB.
originally planned for 500 (17% of the fleet), SBS wanted more.

SMB 44 J on Training
and now, here's my favourite.
the Mercedes OC500LE.
132 of them to be brought in. and here's the latest number 44.
aint she pretty?

the Mercedes OC500LE is indeed much better than the Scania K230UB.
both costing at least 300K each.
the Merc has a gentler gear shift and is much smoother.
plus it comes with kawaii audio ding dongs like we hear in the trains. durr, SMRT.
