BlueTec in Asia
Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) is the first company in Southeast Asia to put Mercedes-Benz urban buses with BlueTec 5 into operation in short-distance public transport. This means that the BlueTec diesel technology so successfully introduced by Daimler in Europe now also has a presence in Asia. And with an order for 66 Mercedes-Benz Citaro BlueTec urban buses that meet the stringent Euro 5 exhaust standard, the SMRT Corporation in Singapore is setting new benchmarks in Southeast Asia.
now this super great news for me. while SBSTransit is 'spamming' our road with their cute 1100 Scania K230UB buses, SMRT is doing things different by ordering in small batches. and of course, SMRT orders different models to give bus enthusiasts something to cheer about.
and let me tell you, we bus fans had been hoping for a Citaro to hit our roads for years already.
now we have it, SMRT's Mercedes Benz Citaro 0530. also knowned as the "Facelifted Citaro" to differentiate this Citaro from the earlier generation of its ancestors. young ancestors in this case.
this Citaro would also be the first to be Elderly Friendly as shown on the sticker on its bumper. looks like SMRT did not proceed with the China brand Yutong buses, though one demonstrator SMB 135 E is on our roads. SMRT is keeping the TIBS tradition alive by purchasing more and more Mercedes Buses.
on the other side, SBS is not replacing their expiring Mercedes with new Merc.
on the plus side, SBS could be the only Public Bus company in the world with the largest number of Scania buses in her fleet.
