jazz and what the farque?

prior to 2004, i wasn't really into that thing called jazz.
i'd always found it hard to appreciate despite it's similarities in most music.
not forgetting that jazz was the pioneer of all the current trend of music.

michael buble did instil some interest in me towards jazz but it was westlife that did the trick.
in 2004 when Brian McFadden left the group [thank god for that] westlife did a themed album. a Rat Pack tribute kinda album. it was Simon Cowell who stirred that idea and finally poured it into a cup. and that's how their 2004 release came about. "Allow Us To Be Frank"

[the international version]

when i got to know of this new album via Channel 5, i was like "WTF? jazz?"
but me being a westlife fan bought the album religiously and listened to all the songs. memorising them all by heart. i'd even put on my blazer and sing along to the song. just to feel 'jazzy' like rat pack/frank sinatra.

and then i proceeded to purchase Michael Buble's album. and there's Jamie Cullum.
and taa-daa. me and jazz.

but years later in late 2009, i'd read an interview article by mark feehily from westlife that really made me go "WTF?!"

[uk version]

read this,
"Mark Feehily wants to "forget" about Westlife's 'Rat Pack' album 'Allow Us To Be Frank'. The 29-year-old singer admits the band didn't want to release the LP - featuring covers of classic swing tracks - but insists their record company thought it would be a good idea after seeing the success of Robbie Williams' 'Swing when You're Winning'. He said: "That was a weird time in our career, really. I'm not making excuses for it, but Brian McFadden had just left. We kind of didn't know what to do......"

like after generating my interest in jazz, now making me go 'wtf u did that for?' hahahaha. i kinda laughed to myself when i first read that.
but oh well, its still a nice album. they introduced me to three dope songs.

Ain't That A Kick In The Head - one that i'd never heard before in my life
Smile - the late Michael Jackson's favourite song. written by the great late Charlie Chaplin himself
Fly Me To The Moon - the easiest song to sing that can make you sound like an awesome singer. the song i sang when PM Lee Hsien Loong officialy opened RP.

so in a way, it was good that westlife and simon cowell did what they did. im grateful.
have a listen.
